It should not be underestimated what impact individuals have on the zeitgeist and thus people – or people and thus the zeitgeist? President Finnbogadottir knew that her election mattered at the time she was elected. But she hardly knew then what the impact would be, this intangible impact that is so difficult to put a finger on – but one can feel it. And is so grateful for it.

President Vigdís is 95 years old today. She is not only a role model and hero for women in Iceland, but she reflects all the best Iceland can be.

Her unassuming pride in being an Icelander blends perfectly with a cosmopolitan interest in everything the world has to offer.

It was a unique national fortune that she was our president – and just as she is proud of Iceland, we Icelanders can be proud of her and what she stands for.
